KORLE BU TEACHING HOSPITAL GOES PAPERLESS

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has kick-started the digitisation of its service to make healthcare delivery paperless.

This forms part of series of rebranding initiatives introduced and implemented by the new management team led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Daniel Asare.

The project, which is being implemented and managed by Lightwave eHealthcare Services, seeks to improve the quality of healthcare delivery, provide quick and reliable medical records. It is also to provide real time bed availability at the wards to cure the “no bed syndrome”, timely response to medical appointments and reduce waiting time in the health delivery chain.

The Departments of Family Medicine/Polyclinic, and Child Health Sub-Budget Management Centre (Sub-BMC) have been selected as pilot areas for the project.
A training workshop on the paperless system was recently organized for all units heads of the Polyclinic/Family Medicine Department as part of processes for the smooth implementation of the digitisation project.

The lead facilitator and software director of the system, Mr. Aditya Patkap said the software for the paperless healthcare delivery was dynamic and robust and could be tweaked to address the needs of the Polyclinic.

He assured participants that various concerns raised will be incorporated into the final roll-out to ensure delivery of quality service at various Sub-BMC’s, adding that ”the paperless system is very flexible and is able to allow most of the issues raised, which are not part of the original plan, to be effected”.

On the effect of power fluctuation from the national grid, the service providers indicated that all the computers would be supported by a UPS should the inevitable happen during service delivery, stressing that the technology used in this paperless system allows users to login with their tablets and phones.

Regarding unavailability of some prescribed medication at a particular Sub-BMC pharmacy, the Consultant revealed that it would be possible, with the click of the button, to tell the client that that very medication is in stock at a particular Pharmacy within Korle Bu. This would therefore ensure that revenue is not lost to competitors.

The Head of Department of Family Medicine/Polyclinic, Dr. Priscilla Naana Vandyck-Sey assured the consultants of her management and staff support towards the full implementation of this paperless system.

She also expressed delight at the impact of the workshop and thanked staff for their full cooperation and insightful contribution towards making the system user-friendly.
