PROFILE OF THE UROLOGY AND NEPHROLOGY CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
History
The idea of a Centre to provide specialized care was conceived after the death of three (3) doctors namely Prof JKM Quartey, Dr Isaac Bentsi and Dr Benjamin Osei- Wiafe with the only survivor Prof George Oko Klufio on the Accra-Kumasi Road returning from an outreach in 2005. This idea came into fruition on the 18th of October 2024 when the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence was commissioned by the former President His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo.
Core functions and services
The concept of this state- of- the- art Urology and Nephrology Center of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is to be the main referral point for urology and nephrology in the country. This project will enable the hospital to provide advanced treatment for individual with genitourinary and kidney disorders including kidney transplant.
As a Centre, through innovative and evidence-based practices using a team of highly skilled healthcare professionals we aim to be a beacon of excellence providing comprehensive, compassionate and innovative urology and nephrology care to clients.
We are also committed to creating a client-centered environment where every individual from and within Ghana and the African subregion feels respected, valued, and empowered to make informed decision about their health.
Education and training
The centre plays a significant role in the education of future healthcare professionals. We work closely with the University of Ghana Medical School and Nursing schools across the country to provide training and examination to students. We are also affiliated to the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Ghanan College of Nurses and Midwives to provide postgraduate specialized training in urology and nephrology to doctors and nurses. We aim to provide our students with hands-on experience in all aspects of urology and nephrology guided by our team of esteemed consultants and senior specialists.
Research and Development
we are deeply involved in medical research. Our research efforts are focused on advancing surgical techniques, improving patient outcomes, and contributing to the broader field of medicine. We work collaboratively with other departments within the hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the University of Ghana to conduct research that expands and enhances knowledge and practice
