Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws, misaligned bite patterns. It can also focus on modifying facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopedics.
Orthodontics as a modern science dates back to the mid 1800s.
Treatment can take several months to a few years; it usually involves the use of fixed orthodontic appliance (dental braces) and many other appliances to slowly move the teeth and jaws around. If the malocclusion is very severe, jaw surgery may be used. Treatment is usually started before a person reaches adulthood since bones can more easily be moved around in children.
Periodontology
Periodontology or periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that incorporates the science, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases pertaining to the gingiva, supporting tissues of the teeth and dental implants as well as systemic diseases or conditions that affect them.
