Eye  Centre

Welcome to the Eye Centre

The Eye Centre is a specialized unit committed to delivering comprehensive eye care services, addressing a wide array of ocular conditions for patients both within our region and beyond. Beyond advanced diagnostics and surgical interventions, the Centre serves as a regional hub for ophthalmology training, equipping medical professionals with specialized skills.

Established with support from the Ghana Government and Lions Club International, the Centre was completed in 2015 and features two theatres, three wards, a VIP ward, and a 12-bed bay. With state-of-the-art equipment, we provide top-tier optometry and ophthalmology services that ensure excellence in both patient care and medical training.

Core Functions and Services

We provide comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for a wide range of eye conditions. Our Centre accepts referrals from across the country, other parts of the sub-region, and various departments within KBTH. We also handle emergency cases and operate 24/7 to ensure continuous, high-quality eye care for all patients.

Nursing Unit

The Centre’s nursing units include General Ophthalmic Nursing, Paediatric Ophthalmic Nursing, Retina Nursing, Ocular Prosthesis, and Theatre Nursing.

Pharmacy

This unit provides services in general ophthalmic medications and drug consumables.

Optometry & Optical Services

Our Centre offers a range of specialized optometry services, including pediatric optometry, low vision care, refraction, and orthoptics. In addition, we provide comprehensive optical services, featuring a selection of both affordable and designer frames. We offer all types of lenses, and these include single vision, progressive, and bifocals, as well as specialized options such as photochromic, transition lenses, anti-reflective coatings, and tinting.

Training and Education

The Eye Centre is a hub for research, training, and outreach, and we collaborate with international partners to advance eye care. We train ophthalmologists for West Africa College of Surgeons and Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons certifications, as well as medical, nursing, ophthalmic nursing, and optometry students from institutions like the University of Ghana, KNUST, and Cape Coast University. Additionally, we provide practical training for Dispensing Optic Assistants and conduct outreach programs to combat preventable blindness. Through partnerships, including with the Himalayan Cataract Project (USA), we work to reduce cataract-related blindness across the region.
