Welcome to the Eye Centre

The Hospital’s Eye Centre provides specialist eye care services and attends to all eye-related diseases it receives in and outside the sub-region. The Centre also trains medical professionals in Ophthalmology.
To improve delivery and training in eye care, the Centre received major funding from the Ghana government and Lions Club International in 2011 to build the Eye Centre.
Lions International Eye Centre, as the place is currently known, was completed in 2015 and has two theatres, three wards, VIP ward, a 12-bed bay and state-of-the-art equipment to provide a wide range of optometry services. The Centre serves as a regional surgical training centre, providing sub-specialty training in ophthalmology for practitioners in West Africa.

The Eye Centre was established to provide the following core functions:

Eye Care Service Delivery

  • Medical and Surgical treatment of patients
  • Referrals from all over the country and also emergencies
  • Referrals from other parts of the sub-region
  • Referrals from other Departments and Units of the KBTH
  • Provides 24 hour services

Research

The Centre undertakes research on its own and in collaboration with other international collaborators.

Training

  • Training of ophthalmologists for membership and fellowship levels with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS)
  • Medical students of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana
  • Nursing students from various nursing and midwifery training colleges (both public and private) and University of Ghana
  • Ophthalmic nursing students
  • Practical training of optometry students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Cape Coast University
  • Practical training of Dispensing Optic Assistants

Outreaches

The Centre is in collaboration with some foreign organisations such as Himalayan Cataract Project Inc. USA, to reduce cataract-related blindness.

Nursing Unit

Other nursing unit at the Centre includes General Ophthalmic Nursing, Paediatric Ophthalmic Nursing, Retina Nursing, Ocular Prosthesis, Theatre Nursing.

Optometry & Optical Services

There are services in Paediatric optometry, low vision, refraction and Othorptics.
The centre also provides optical services which include the sale of affordable and designer frames, all types of lenses (single, progressive and bifocals), photochromic, transitions, anti-reflex and tainting.

Pharmacy

This Unit provide services in general ophthalmic medications and Drug consumables
