Welcome to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been at the forefront of providing outstanding healthcare for women since its establishment in 1962. With a strong history and a commitment to excellence, we are dedicated to offering comprehensive care across all stages of a woman’s life—from pregnancy and childbirth to addressing complex reproductive health issues. Our 371-bed facility is equipped with state-of-the-art resources to provide high-quality services to meet the needs of women at all ages and stages of life.

Our Leadership and Staff

Our department is guided by a passionate team of medical professionals, administrators, and support staff, all of whom are committed to the highest standards of care. Under the leadership of Senior Consultant Dr. Isaac Osei Koranteng, our department thrives on collaborative teamwork. With expertise spanning obstetrics, gynaecology, midwifery, and a range of allied health specialties, we deliver a holistic approach to women’s health.

Core Functions and Services

We are proud to offer a wide range of services aimed at promoting and maintaining women’s health. These services include:

  • Maternal Health: Comprehensive prenatal and postnatal care, management of high-risk pregnancies, and safe childbirth practices.

  • Gynaecological Services: Treatment of menstrual disorders, fibroids, pelvic pain, and conditions such as endometriosis.

  • Reproductive Health: Family planning, fertility assessments, preconception counseling, and contraception services.

  • Specialized Services: Menopause management, urogynecology (urinary incontinence), and mental health support.

  • Preventive Care: Routine wellness exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and immunizations (e.g., HPV vaccine).

  • Lifestyle and Wellness Programmes: Nutrition counseling, weight management, and physical therapy consultations.

Training and Education

As a teaching hospital, we are committed to shaping the future of healthcare by providing exceptional training opportunities. Our department plays a crucial role in educating undergraduate and postgraduate students, with opportunities for clinical rotations, internships, and hands-on experience under expert mentorship. Undergraduate Programmes:

  • Specialized training in partnership with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), West African College of Surgeons (WACS), and other medical authorities.
