The Department of Surgery of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is one of the earliest and most prestigious departments established to provide exceptional surgical care and consultancy services. Our department is a hub of expertise that delivers specialized care across a wide range of surgical disciplines.

The Department is housed in the main six-storey Surgery Block, and although several subspecialty units have developed into independent centres, they remain integral parts of the Department of Surgery. These include the National Cardiothoracic Centre, National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre, Trauma & Orthopaedics Centre, and the New Allied Surgery Department.


Core Functions and Services

The Department of Surgery is committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered surgical care. Our services span several subspecialties, each offering expert treatment and surgical interventions. The department is also a key player in the teaching and research sectors of the hospital. We offer the following specialized services:

  • General Surgery: Including breast, HPB (Hepatobiliary), colorectal, hernia, and vascular surgery.

  • Plastic Surgery: Specializing in reconstructive surgeries, burns treatment, and cosmetic procedures.

  • Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery: Providing advanced care for trauma, fractures, joint problems, and musculoskeletal issues.

  • Urology: Focusing on surgical interventions for conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive system.

  • Neurosurgery: Addressing surgical needs of the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery: Specializing in heart and lung surgeries.

  • Paediatric Surgery: Providing surgical care for children with congenital and acquired conditions.

  • Ophthalmology: Surgical interventions for eye-related issues.

  • Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgery: Focusing on surgeries of the ear, nose, and throat.

  • Dental Surgery: Addressing surgical needs of the oral cavity, teeth, and jaw.

Our department also conducts Arthroscopic Surgery for joint issues, offering minimally invasive treatments.


Training and Education

The Department of Surgery plays a significant role in the education of future healthcare professionals. We are closely affiliated with the University of Ghana Medical School, ensuring a collaborative approach to the training and examination of medical students. Additionally, we offer postgraduate training for those wishing to specialize in surgery, as well as practical training for nursing students. We aim to provide our students with hands-on experience in all aspects of surgery, guided by our team of esteemed consultants and senior specialists.


Research and Development

As a leading department in medical care and innovation, we are deeply involved in medical research. Our research efforts are focused on advancing surgical techniques, improving patient outcomes, and contributing to the broader field of medicine. We work collaboratively with other departments within the hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the University of Ghana to conduct research that enhances our practice and expands surgical knowledge.

  • Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre: Led by Mr. Opoku-Ware Ampomah, focusing on reconstructive, plastic, and burns surgery.

  • Orthopaedics and Trauma: Headed by Dr. Frederick Kwarteng, specializing in trauma and musculoskeletal issues.

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery Centre: Led by Dr. Entsua Mensah, offering heart and lung surgeries.

  • Allied Surgery Department: Headed by Dr. Kenneth Baidoo, offering specialized surgical treatments across multiple disciplines.
