The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department is a leading medical facility dedicated to providing exceptional care for trauma and orthopaedic cases. Serving not only the local metropolis but also the surrounding regions and even patients from the West African Sub-region, our centre is a trusted hub for the treatment of accidents and orthopaedic conditions. Working in collaboration with other departments within the hospital, we specialize in restoring our patients to their near or full recovery through advanced care and a patient-centric approach.


Core Functions and Services

Our Trauma and Orthopaedics Department is committed to delivering specialized care for trauma, accident, and orthopaedic cases across all age groups. Our services include:

  • Trauma Care: Immediate intervention for trauma patients from accidents and injuries.
  • Orthopaedic Treatment: Comprehensive treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including fractures, joint problems, and congenital conditions.
  • Arthroscopic Surgery: Minimally invasive procedures to treat joint issues, particularly in the knee, shoulder, and other large joints.

In addition to emergency and specialized care, we work closely with other departments to ensure holistic treatment for all our patients.


Types of Cases We Treat

At the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department, we treat a wide range of conditions, including:

  • All Trauma Cases: From road traffic accidents to falls and other injuries.
  • All Orthopaedic Cases: Covering fractures, joint issues, congenital deformities, and musculoskeletal conditions.

Our team is highly skilled in addressing the full spectrum of trauma and orthopaedic cases, from emergency care to long-term rehabilitation.


Training and Education

As a teaching hospital, the Trauma and Orthopaedics Centre plays a key role in educating the next generation of healthcare professionals. We offer training opportunities for:

  • Undergraduate Medical Students: Teaching them the fundamentals of trauma and orthopaedics.
  • Postgraduate Trainees: Providing advanced training in orthopaedics for specialists in the making.

Clinical Units

The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department is equipped with specialized clinical units and support services to provide the highest level of care. These include:

  • Outpatient Department (OPD): The first point of contact for patients referred to the centre. The OPD is divided into:
    • Acute Care Outpatient Department: For immediate care of trauma cases.
    • Specialty Clinics: For ongoing orthopaedic care.
  • Emergency and Casualty Reception: This area is crucial for stabilizing severe trauma patients before they are admitted to the wards for further treatment.

    • General Orthopaedics and Trauma Clinic: Monday – Thursday
    • Arthroplasty Clinic: Tuesday
    • Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinic: Wednesday
    • Fracture Clinic: Friday
