The National Insurance Commission yesterday climaxed their 2022 nationwide blood donation campaign with a call on Ghanaians to donate blood.
The closing ceremony, which took place at the Peadiatric Oncology Unit, also witnessed NIC donating to the Unit.
The Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah said that it was heart warming to see the effort by the Commission to show love to others, as blood is essential.
He noted that one of the challenges is the lack of people willing to donate blood out of their good will, adding, “we need people who are civil minded, who would want to do this without any selfish interest”.
The CEO applauded the NIC for undertaking a worthy cause which will ensure the availability of blood for patients who would need it.
Dr. Ampomah mentioned that the hospital’s blood bank was currently being refurbished to enable it function better.
Dr. Ampomah also appealed to NIC to have insurance packages to cater for trauma patients.
He noted that the lack of such a package had witnessed several instance where caregivers contribute monies to buy drugs and other essential items for a critically-ill patient.
Dr. Dilys John-Teye, the Southern Area Director of the National Blood Service noted that the NIC’s nationwide blood campaign started in August in this year and they had received 2,015 pints of blood.
This, she said, was an improvement from last year’s campaign which had 802 pints of blood donated nationwide.
The donations, she noted, will go a long way to help the citizens of the country.
The Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Justice Ofori, urged other institutions to emulate what the Commission had done.
“We should all send word around that the blood service needs blood so we should all support”, Dr. Ofori noted.
The Commissioner thanked various insurance companies, individuals and groups who ensured a successful blood campaign.
The NIC presented gallons of parazone, Bedsheets, pillow cases, Syringes, drip stands, surgical gloves, liquid soaps, plasters and Methylated Spirit to the Peadiatric Oncology Unit and also shared food items to inpatients at the Unit.
