The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, inaugurated a €38 million Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare system. This is the fifth Centre of Excellence at the hospital, designed to provide affordable care for urological and nephrological conditions, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad and positioning Ghana as a hub for medical tourism.

The facility includes a 101-bed capacity, a 30-suite dialysis station, a 70-bed genito-urinary unit, outpatient services, diagnostic and treatment facilities, as well as research and training programs. The Centre is expected to offer life-saving treatments such as kidney transplants, contributing to Ghana’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). It also features medical and non-medical support services, along with a post-construction maintenance program.

Health Minister Bernard Okoe Boye emphasized the importance of maintaining the Centre, making it a key part of the performance contract for the head of the facility. He also noted that if successful, similar facilities will be replicated nationwide under the Government’s Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all Ghanaians. The Minister thanked Vamed, the contractors, for completing the project despite financial challenges.

Hospital officials, including Acting CEO Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, expressed their gratitude to the government and noted that the Centre will benefit both Ghanaians and the West African sub-region. Vamed CEO Dr. Martin Treml praised the collaboration with the Ghanaian government and emphasized the facility’s adaptation to local needs.

The Centre was funded by Raiffeisen Bank International AG, with insurance from OeKB Group.
