Consultants and Specialists
Clinical Units
The main units of the department are:
1.The Outpatient's Department (OPD), which is the first point of call for all patients referred to the department. This is also divided into the acute care outpatient department and the specialty clinics.
These specialty clinics include
- Neurodevelopmental Clinic (Monday)
- Asthma Clinic (Tuesday)
- Diabetes & Endocrine Clinic (Tuesday)
- Cardiac Clinic & HIV Clinic (Wednesdays)
- Sickle Cell Clinic (Thursday)
- Neonatal follow up clinic (Friday)
2. The Emergency Room is the ward where very ill children requiring intervention/admission are first stabilized before being admitted to the wards.
3. General Paediatric Wards consist of three medical wards (P2, P2A, & P3) and a surgical ward (P1). There is also a babies unit for infants under six months (except surgical cases)
4.The Children's Surgical Ward admits children requiring surgery.
5. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located on the 3rd floor of the Maternity Block, in proximity to the labour ward, is where premature and ill, new born term babies are admitted.
6. The Paediatric Oncology Unit (POU)
The Paediatric Oncology Unit (POU) comprises an inpatient Paediatric Oncology Ward and an outpatient Paediatric Oncology Day Care Unit. The Paediatric Oncology Ward has a bed capacity of 26 and admits 160 – 180 new childhood cancer cases annually. The Oncology Day Care Unit, has 8 beds for children coming for outpatient chemotherapy and follow up. This complements the in-patient services for children with cancer from Ghana and other countries in the sub-region. The POU also has an outreach nursing team that undertakes home visits for children receiving palliative care and to follow up children who miss treatment appointments.
The POU has 16 nurses, 2 consultants, 2 specialist Paediatricians, 3 residents and 3 house officers. Professor Lorna Renner is the current head of the POU.
7. Child Protection Unit
This unit was opened in 2009 to facilitate management of children with suspected abuse. It provides a child-friendly room for expert assessment. Prof. Eben Badoe is the current head of the unit.
Support Units
The Clinical Units are supported by:
1. A Child Welfare Clinic
2. A Records and Biostatistics Unit
3 A Satellite Pharmacy
4. A Satellite Laboratory
5. A Satellite Xray unit
Another support unit for the department is the Mothers’ Hostel. It was originally set up to house mothers of children admitted to the department, but the service has now been extended to clients from other parts of the hospital. This generates income for maintenance of the facility.
Types of cases
A variety of childhood medical and surgical emergencies and chronic diseases are referred to the department from all over Ghana especially the southern half of the country. The department also works closely with other subspecialties e.g. ophthalmology, neurosurgery, etc in the care of children admitted to other departments in Korle Bu.
Statistics
General out-patient attendance is on average 36,000/year. Thirty percent of these patients get admitted to the in-patient wards for further management.
NICU has an average of 2000 admissions/year.
