The Trauma and Orthopedics Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has acquired and installed a brand new C-Arm X-ray image intensifier worth $50,000 to enhance outcomes during surgeries.
The machine was procured earlier this month through the efforts of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah.
Prior to the purchase, the Department owned two of such equipment which performed all the major Orthopaedic surgeries until they broke down in February this year.
With the breakdown of the machines, major Orthopaedic surgeries had to be suspended.
Other tertiary Orthopaedic services such as training of Orthopaedics surgeons also had to halt, thus affecting care delivery with the attendant reduction in revenue generation to the department.
Due to the complexity of Orthopaedic surgeries, about 75% of cases attended to are performed with the aid of the C-arm machine.
The acquisition of the new machine has enabled the department to resume all services affected by the breakdown of the old machines.
Care providers at the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department has expressed their delight for the acquisition and, thus resumption of this specialised care.
The Department has trained all relevant care providers who will use the machine to ensure its optimal use and longevity.
