Dr. Lily Wu wins Korle Bu’s Maiden Innovation Summit 2020

Dr. Lily Wu, a Surgeon at the Vascular Unit of the Surgical Department has been crowned the best innovator for the maiden Innovation Summit in Korle Bu.

She came on top beating competition from Francis Ansah Sasraku from Biomedical Engineering Unit and Dr. Benard Morton of the Renal Transplant team .

The Innovation Summit is part of the activities by Management to lead healthcare delivery in Ghana and the sub-region. The two day Summit received as many as 26 presentations from departments in Korle Bu.

Dr. Wu won with her presentation on Endo Vascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair in Ghana. An aortic aneurysm is a bulging, dilation or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel, usually an artery, that is due to weakness or degeneration that develops in a portion of the artery wall

An abdominal aorta aneurysm is a dilatation of the largest blood vessel in the body to more than 50% of its normal size. This vessel distributes blood/nutrients to the whole body. It occupies pride of place in front of the vertebral bodies of the spine. When it enlarges, it can cause back pain, abdominal pain, and when it grows large enough, may be felt as a pulsatile abdominal mass.

Francis Ansah Sasraku of Biomedical Engineering Unit came in second place with his presentation on Suck Vacuum Suction Machine. Following in third place was a presentation on Renal Transplant in KBTH by Dr. Bernard Morton of the Renal Transplant Unit.

The three received laptops and plaques, while all the participants received 16 GB pen drives and certificates.
The maiden event was graced by several revered people in and out of the medical field such as; Dr. Kwabena Twum-Nuamah (Chairman, Parliamentary Committee on Health), Prof. Efua Hesse (President, Accra College of Medicine), Hon. Dr. Oko Boye ( Board Chairman Korle Bu), Directors and Heads of Departments/Units of the Hospital.
Delivering his address, the Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Dr. Daniel Asare said “in a rapidly changing healthcare environment we seem to be looking for better ways to transform the quality of patients care, reduce cost and optimise clinical and business processes”. Adding, “the Innovation Summit is to celebrate how we are transforming healthcare.”

Dr. Ali Samba, Director of Medical Affairs was the Chairman of the planning committee. At the end, Dr. Samba made a call on all staff and Departments to fully take part in the annual event and to be innovative on their various profession.

The Summit which was to discover and showcase cutting edge healthcare practices
was under the theme “Showcasing Solutions, Transforming Healthcare.”
